If you just read the site: the page you visited, roughly when, the page that sent you, and a coarse device type. We attach a random identifier from a first-party cookie so we can tell one visit from two.

We do not store your IP address. Where we need to recognise repeated activity — rate limiting, abuse detection — we store a one-way hash of it with a secret that rotates. The original address is not recoverable from what we keep.

If you have an account: your email address, display name, anything you put in your profile, and your sign-in history.

If you search: the query text. This is genuinely useful to us — searches that return nothing tell us what to cover next.

• To understand which of our pages are useful, so we can make more of them.
• To find gaps in our coverage.
• To keep accounts secure and stop abuse.
• To report to advertisers how their campaigns performed, in aggregate.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not build advertising profiles about individual readers.

Essential cookies keep you signed in and let us tell visits apart. They are set without asking, because the site does not work without them.

Advertising and measurement cookies require your consent, and the choice is enforced on our servers rather than only in the banner. If you decline, they are not set.

With your consent to analytics, we also use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. Google sets its own cookies for this and receives the pages you view and technical details such as your browser and approximate location. It does not load at all if you decline.

• Raw page-view records: 14 months, then aggregated and deleted.
• Search queries linked to an account or visitor: 6 months, then anonymised.
• Abuse-detection metadata: 18 months.
• Audit logs of staff actions: 7 years.
• A deleted account: 30 days’ grace, then anonymised. Content you posted remains but is attributed to a deleted user.

Our infrastructure providers — hosting, database, email delivery — process data on our instructions. Google provides our analytics (if you consent) and its own policy applies to that data. Where advertising is served by a third-party network, that network sets its own cookies subject to your consent, and its own policy applies to them.

You can export your data or ask us to delete your account from your account settings. You can withdraw analytics and advertising consent at any time.
